Same-Sex and Other-Sex Unions in Two British Birth Cohorts: A Dynamic Perspective

Charles Q. Strohm, University of California, Los Angeles

This project investigates the formation and dissolution of same- and other-sex unions throughout the life course, providing a more dynamic picture than has been previously available. Using relationship histories from several British birth cohorts, I use multistate life tables and event history analysis to study the timing, duration, and sociodemographic correlates of same- and other-sex coresident unions. In light of the changing context of same-sex partnering, this project also explores cohort change in the demography of same-sex unions. Further, I investigate variation between women and men, given gender differences in psychological orientations towards relationships.
